Canada’s last Budd RDC mainline train will flag-stop anywhere along 484 km of roadless Canadian Shield.
Train 185 is the last mainline holdout of the classic Budd Rail Diesel Car, rattling three times a week across 484 km of lake-strewn Canadian Shield on the CPKC transcontinental. It stops on request at any milepost, unloading canoes for the Spanish River, supplies for fly-in-quality fishing camps and cottagers whose cabins sit fifty kilometres from the nearest road. Biscotasing, midway, was Grey Owl’s village; White River, at the end, sold the world the bear cub that became Winnie-the-Pooh.
Along the way
- Spanish River canoe country
- Biscotasing, Grey Owl’s village
- Chapleau and its boreal game preserve
- Franz flag stop
- White River, Winnie-the-Pooh’s hometown
