A 1941 steam engine ambles 23 km through the Serra Gaúcha wine country to a soundtrack of tarantellas and popping corks.
The Italian wine colonies of the Serra Gaúcha finally got their railway in 1919, and after regular traffic faded, tour operator Giordani relit the boiler in 1992 to create Brazil’s most festive steam ride. A 1941 Maria Fumaça takes ninety minutes over the 23 km from Bento Gonçalves to Carlos Barbosa, pausing at Garibaldi while accordions, tarantellas and rounds of local wine and sparkling juice work through the wooden cars.
