Completed only in 2009, the overnight run leaves Tehran at dusk and descends at dawn past Marvdasht, the plain of Persepolis, into Shiraz.
Shiraz only joined Iran’s rail map in 2009, so its night train from the capital is a young classic. Departures leave Tehran in the early evening, skirting the holy city of Qom and the desert oasis of Kashan while attendants make up the four-berth compartments. By dawn the train is high on the Fars plateau, and it drops past Marvdasht — the plain of Persepolis — to reach the city of Hafez in time for breakfast.
