The only way to roadless Núria: Abt rack rails climbing 1,000 vertical metres through the Freser gorges to a sanctuary at 1,964 m.
The Vall de Núria has never been reached by road: since 1931 the metre-gauge cremallera has been the only mechanised way up to the sanctuary, ski bowl and lake at 1,964 m. From Ribes de Freser the railcars run on adhesion to the stone village of Queralbs, then engage the Abt rack for gradients of up to 15% through the Gorges del Freser. In 40 minutes the line climbs more than a vertical kilometre.
